What I’ve Learned from Going Viral on Instagram

I have gone viral many times.  Here are the posts that went especially viral- 100k-3.3 million views.

Beyond these I’ve had other posts also go viral, meaning they reached a much wider audience than my actual following.

I have worked with women business owners for years now and the first question is always- how can I go viral?!

Somewhere along the line, we have been conditioned to think that going viral will change our entire lives and businesses.  Yes- that has happened to creators, but it’s not the norm.

Let’s break down going viral and what I have learned from having multiple viral videos.

You Have to Be Ready For New Eyes

Going viral is icing on the cake of an already solid business.  Meaning that if you go viral but your back end is a mess, you may not be able to manage an influx of customers.  You want to make sure that your actual business is as dialed in as possible so that when you go viral, you are set up to give new customers a fantastic experience.  This is key to getting these folks to come back again rather than seeing your viral video and then moving on.

Going viral is fun and exciting, but it doesn’t necessarily catapult your business to massive success.  It’s a fantastic chance to seize on these new viewers and convert them into paying customers, but you have to be ready to do that.

Consistency is Key

Consistency will help you go viral.  Consistency in your posting and consistency in your messaging is key in helping your content go viral.  Why is this important, and how do I know it?

I know this because my most viral video was posted twice.  The first time I posted it, I was not posting super consistently and my messaging was certainly not consistent at all.  The video did well, but not amazing.

The second time I posted it, I had been consistently posting (daily) and my messaging was crystal clear.  This time the video blew up.

Why does this happen?  Ultimately, we are playing the Instagram game, and when you are posting consistently and your messaging is incredibly clear, the algorithm knows who to push that content to and also knows that you are a legitimate creator who is a valuable resource to your audience.

There will be Trolls

Not everyone will agree with you. Going viral means a LOT of eyes are on your content, and not everyone will think your content is amazing.  Be prepared for alot of troll comments, and take the time right now to think about how you would handle that.  I actually turned off the comments in my most viral video and trolls took the time to DM me and negatively comment on other posts.

I didn’t find this challenging because I think that if someone is taking the time to leave negative comments towards someone they have never met, they are not in a good place in their lives.  However, I can see how this could be mentally draining and triggering, so put your mental health first.

Stay tuned for more tips on creating viral and conversion content!  I’m cheering you on.
